Limiting the choice of prime sights is not an easy task in a land as rich and varied as Tuscany. Its storybook landscape is home to medieval hill towns, fabled wines and, as crucible of the Renaissance, an unrivalled collection of artistic masterpieces. Here are the best of the best.
-
Beautiful recently restored historic farmhouse with swimming pool in middle of Tuscan countryside. Amazing view of nearby hilltop village. Seven independent apartments. Lots of wonderful local eating: olive oil, wine, cheese, etc all produced locally. Lots to do for those who want nature (its on the slopes of Monte Amiata with national nature parks) or culture (every Tuscan town has something beautiful!)

Baldovino is a busy restaurant situated at the side of Santa Croce [ owned by a Scotsman ! ] . As well as serving good traditional Tuscan dishes , Baldovino also serves up good Pizzas from it's wood burning oven . When you eat here you are guaranteed good fare , served up by welcoming and friendly staff . It is popular both with Tourists and also local people . They also have a web site so that you can book a table prior to your visit [ which I inevitably do ! ] . I would highly recommend a meal here . I have enjoyed many on my eight visits to Florence over the past six years .

You may perhaps choose to pledge your vows under a pergola adorned with flowers framed by the setting sun or hold a magically illuminated blessing under the stars set against medieval towers..
-
Florence's most famous gelato on Via Isole Delle Stinche, a small street just around the corner from Piazza Santa Croce is Cafe Vivoli. Great chocolate flavours. The Vivoli family runs the cafe Vivoli for decades. You can sit at the tables for free and also eat lunch. Try a crema cafe` that is an expresso coffee in a large cup that is lined with luscious vanilla gelato

Casa Portagioia is an elegant yet relaxed country retreat near the towns of Cortona and Castiglion Fiorentino– somewhere between a country hotel and your best friend’s home. It is a place where you can relax, take time to reflect on your travels and to be energized and enthused in to seeing more of the wonderful places Tuscany (and Umbria) have to offer.
Casa Portagioia offers 5 independent guest bedrooms and 2 suite apartments, all with luxury bathrooms. (Four of the bedrooms and both apartments benefit from air-conditioning). Their accommodations are fresh and inviting. For a Tuscan country B&B you’ll find everything ‘just so’ from the comfortable orthopaedic beds to the modern bright bathrooms to the lovely views of the gardens and surrounding Tuscan hillside.
You might also be at Casa Portagioia for one of their dinner parties. During the summer these take place on one of our terraces overlooking the bucolic splendour of the valley. A five-course feast is served – and you might like to try some of Tuscany’s finest and award winning wines from our cellar.
The focal points of Casa Portagioia are the spectacular pool with its panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside and Casa Portagioia’s gardens. The Cyprus lined drive, the lavender, roses, rosemary and ginistra mingle with terracotta pots bursting with summer colours and fragrances.

A lovely fishing village with a beautiful view from the fortified hill towering over the harbour. If you are down early in the morning you can see the fresh fish being landed. There is a gorgeous beach running north to the luxury marina at Punta Ala.

Florentine food in a family-run setting ... simple and tasty and reasonable. Near Arno.
-
Situated next door to it's sister Restaurant Baldovino , this delightful enoteca offers up a superb selection of Italian wines and Grappa accompanied by a quality assortment of tasty snacks . You are ensured a friendly and welcoming service and also useful tips regarding the available wines . [ I developed a love of Brunello after visiting here !] . Unfortunately , I often visit Florence in early December to coincide with the feast of the Immaculate Conception and the Scottish Fair , and sadly , on my past two visits at this time the enoteca has been closed . Well worth a visit or two when you are in Florence .
