  • Only barren pueblo land in 1886, developer Frank Botsford bought a substantial area in La Jolla which he subdivided. Other real estate developers soon caught on to La Jolla’s potential and built stylish resorts. But it wasn’t until Ellen Browning Scripps arrived in 1896 with her generous civic endowments that the town developed as a research, education, and art center. Now, La Jolla sits on some of the most expensive real estate in the US. It’s no wonder that residents refer to their slice of heaven as the “Jewel.”

Maps of UCSD are available from the Information Booths at the campus entrances. On sunny weekdays, come early to find parking, and make sure you have lots of change for the meters.
