  • 1. Vallée des Merveilles, Mercantour National Park

    Serious hikers only on this marvellous mountain trek. Allow 2–3 days, overnighting in refuges. Contact Park HQ before setting out (see Vallée des Merveilles and Musée des Merveilles).

  • 2. Martel Trail, Verdon Gorges

    A 15-km (9-mile) trail from Le Palud to Point Sublime. Allow 7–8 hours (see Martell Trail).

  • 3. Calanques, Marseille

    Spectacular walking along headland trails (see Les Calanques).

  • 4. Massif des Maures

    The forests, valleys and peaks are criss-crossed with excellent trails (see Hill Walks in the Maures Mountains).

  • 5. Coastal Path, Six-Fours-les-Plages

    The seaside walk to La Seyne starts off flat, then climbs to the Cap Sicié. Great views. Allow 7 hours.

  • 6. Baou de St-Jeannet, St-Jeannet

    The “baou” is the rock overlooking the village near Vence. Stiff but rewarding walk (3–4 hours).

  • 7. Port-Cros, Iles d’Hyères

    A paradise of forests, creeks and headlands. Walk the coast in 5 hours (see Porquerolles, Iles d’Hyères).

  • 8. Dentelles de Montmirail

    Trek from Sablet village up to St Amand, the highest point. Six hours (see A Day’s Drive in the Vaucluse Mountains).

  • 9. Vieux Nice

    From the Old Town up to Castle Hill and down again: the best in-town walking in the region (see Vieux Nice).

  • 10. Massif de l’Esterel

    The best mountain path is from Pont de l’Esterel to Mont Vinaigre. Four hours (see Massif de l’Esterel).
