Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

The largest encyclopedic art museum in the western US, LACMA was founded in 1910 and moved to its present Miracle Mile home in 1965. It now consists of six buildings, including the remarkable Pavilion for Japanese Art and the LACMA West annex. The museum’s treasure trove includes paintings by Dürer, Monet, and Picasso; American and Latin American art; and work from around the Middle East and Asia. Special exhibits and a lively schedule of concerts, lectures, and film screenings make LACMA a community destination.
Every Tuesday at 1pm, the museum presents a classic film in the Bing Theater LACMA’s Art Rental & Sales Gallery is located on the lower level of the Bing Center

1. American Art
This collection offers a survey of American art from the 1700s to the 1940s. Among the highlights are works by late 19th-century figurative artists such as Winslow Homer. Other works include paintings by George Bellows and Mary Cassatt, specifically Mother About to Wash her Sleepy Child .

2. Ancient & Islamic Art
Egyptian tomb reliefs, glass from ancient Greece, bronzes from Syria, and ceramics from Mexico are prized items from ancient cultures. Even more renowned is the Islamic collection.

3. South & Southeast Asian Art
This collection is one of the finest, with stone sculpture, watercolors, drawings, ritual art, and coins. Among the highlights are Indian art and sculpture from some Southeast Asian countries.

4. Chinese & Korean Art
Paintings, metalwork, and Buddhist art from the third century BC to the 20th century are part of this collection. The recreated Ming-period scholar’s studio is a standout.

5. Japanese Art
The Pavilion for Japanese Art is the only building outside Japan solely devoted to its art. It houses superb Edo-period paintings and exquisite porcelain.

6. Modern & Contemporary Art
LACMA has a growing collection of art from 1900 to the present in media ranging from painting to video installations. Kandinsky, Matisse, Picasso, Mark Rothko, and David Hockney are among those represented.

7. Latin American Art
A new gallery in LACMA West displays major works by a veritable who’s who in Latin American art, including Frida Kahlo and muralists such as Diego Rivera, whose iconic Flower Day is displayed.

8. European Painting & Sculpture
An exquisite collection that encompasses works by Flemish and Dutch masters and French Impressionists, including Monet’s In the Woods at Giverny .

9. Photography, Prints, & Drawings
Work by photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston and prints and drawings by Dürer, Toulouse-Lautrec, and others are shown in rotating exhibitions.

10. Decorative Arts
This collection has a wide range of European and American furniture, metalwork, and glass from the Middle Ages to today. The Palevsky Arts and Crafts collection is very comprehensive.
