1. Registering

Why do I need to register on traveldk.com?

Once you have registered, you are a member of the DK Travel community. Registration is free and allows you to submit your own travel recommendations (members’ attractions), write reviews and create, organize and personalize your own tailor-made travel guides.

How can I register on traveldk.com?

  • To register, click on ‘Register today!’ in the top right-hand corner of any page on the website. Already registered? Sign in.
  • Under the ‘Register now’ heading, fill out the required details and tick the box to confirm that you agree to the DK Travel Terms and Conditions.
  • Click on ‘Register’.
  • A confirmation message should now appear informing you that an email has been sent to the email address you supplied. If this screen does not appear, you have not successfully registered.
  • When you receive the confirmation email, click on the link supplied to confirm your registration.
  • You are now registered.
  • To personalize your profile, click on ‘Edit Profile’ once signed in. Here, you can add a photo that will be visible when you write a review or add an attraction, it will also appear on the front cover of any guides you create.

What should I do if I don’t receive my confirmation email when registering?

If you didn’t see the ‘Thank you for registering’ message on the site at the end of the registration process please try registering again.

If you did see this message please do the following:

  1. Make sure you are checking the email account that you used to register.
  2. Check your spam filter/ junk mail for the confirmation email as it may have been blocked.
  3. Try registering again using the same email address and password.

What should I do if the link in my confirmation email doesn’t work when registering?

The link in your confirmation email expires after 24 hours. If it has been longer than 24 hours since you registered, please register again.

If you have forgotten your password, go to the registration page and enter your email address under ‘Forgotten your password?’

An email will be sent to you containing a link, click on this and follow the instructions to reset you password.

2. Tailor-made travel guides

How do I create my own travel guide?

  1. Register, or sign-in if you’re already registered.
  2. Choose a destination.
  3. Browse the destination attractions.
  4. Select ‘Add to guide’ on the attractions you’d like to include in your guide.
  5. Select ‘View your guide’ or ‘Open’ on your ‘Personal guide’ tab to view your selections.
  6. Organize: you can add chapters to your guide with titles and brief descriptions by clicking on ‘Create a new chapter’. You can drag and drop your selected attractions into your created chapters.
  7. Personalize: when you are happy with the content and arrangement of your guide, click on ‘Step 2: Personalize’. Here, you can add a picture, a title, and a brief description of what your guide is about to the front cover of your guide. Click on ‘Save Changes’ when you are happy with your cover.
  8. Download & share: you can now choose to share your guide for free with the traveldk.com community, download it as a PDF for $5/£2.50 or have it printed as a book for $15/£10 to take with on your travels.

How many attractions can I add to my guide?

Add as many attractions as you'd like to your guide, up to a maximum of fifty-two items (including any chapter pages). But remember the more attractions you add, the more information you're getting for your money!

How do I download my travel guide?

  • When you are happy with the content and arrangement of your guide, click on ‘Step 2: Personalize’. Here you can add a picture, a title, and a description of what your guide is about, to the front cover. Click on ‘Save Changes’ when you are happy with your cover.
  • Click on ‘Continue to next step’. To download your guide so that you can print copies, select ‘Download your guide’. It may take a few minutes for your guide to fully download. Once your guide has downloaded, follow the instructions to proceed to the payment section.
  • Once payment has been made, you can open and print your guide. A link to your guide will also be emailed to you, from which you can open and print your guide.

What do I do if my travel guide does not download properly?

Contact us at traveleditor@dk.com giving the following information:

  • The specific problem with your download. For example, it would not download, not all of it downloaded, you could not open it once downloaded.
  • The point in the download process when the problem occurred.
  • If you are on a PC or a Mac.
  • What browser you use. For example, Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Opera or Netscape.
  • The version of your browser. This can be found out by opening your Internet homepage, going to ‘Help’, ‘About’.

Providing as much information as you can will help us to find out the problem and fix it faster.

How do I print my downloaded travel guide?

In order for your guide to fit an A4 sheet, select ‘page scaling’ and choose ‘fit to page’ from the options. If you would like to print two pages of your guide per A4 sheet printed, select ‘multiple pages per sheet’ and choose to ‘auto-rotate pages’ (these options are not available on all computers.)

How do I buy my travel guide as a printed book?

  • When you are happy with the content and arrangement of your guide, click on ‘Step 2: Personalize’. Here you can add a picture, a title, and a description of what your guide is about, to the front cover. Click on ‘Save Changes’ when you are happy with your cover.
  • Click on ‘Continue to next step’. To buy your guide as a professionally printed book that will be delivered to you, select ‘Buy’. You can then proceed to enter your delivery and payment information.
  • When you have successfully paid for your printed guide, you can view it by downloading it as a PDF. A link will also be emailed to you, from which you can open and print your guide as a PDF. Your guide should be delivered to you within one working week.

How do I pay for my travel guide?

When you have chosen to download or buy your published guide, you will be asked to pay for it.

  • The price for a downloaded guide is $5/£2.50 and the PDF will become available to download once payment has been made.
  • Prices for published guides start at $15/£10 — the prices include delivery costs and are therefore dependent on the delivery address.

What’s the difference between downloading a guide and buying a guide as a printed book?

You can print your downloaded guide onto paper yourself to take on your trip but if you choose to buy a printed guide, it will be professionally printed as a book and delivered to you.

How do I share my travel guide?

  3. Your guide is then submitted for approval and will only go live on the site if it has been approved. If your guide has not appeared on the site more than 3 days after you chose to share it, please contact traveleditor@dk.com.

I chose to share my guide online. Why can’t I see it on the site?

Submitted guides have to be approved in order to go live on the site. Common reasons for guides not being approved are there are not enough attractions in your guide or the cover photo is unsuitable.

3. Submitting attractions & reviews

What is an attraction?

DK attractions: The site contains thousands of DK attractions, such as hotels, shops, restaurants, museums etc, taken from DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides.

Members’ attractions: You can also add your own attractions to make sure that your favorite places are listed on the site. These are then available for fellow travelers to view and add to their personal guides.

Attractions should be original places that do not already feature on the site. If you would like to add information to an attraction that is already featured on the site then you should add a review.

What do I need to do to submit my favorite place to go, stay or visit to traveldk.com?

  1. Register, or sign-in if you’re already registered.

  3. Select ‘Submit an attraction’ and follow the instructions.
  4. Please provide as much information as possible so that other travelers can benefit from your knowledge.
  5. Your attraction will be submitted for approval and, if approved, it will go live on the site.

Why can’t I see my attraction on traveldk.com?

Submitted attractions have to be approved in order to go live on the site. Common reasons for attractions not being approved are there is not enough information for other travelers to be able to use your attraction, the attraction is already listed on the site as a DK Attraction or that personal details have been supplied in the wrong section.

How do I rate an attraction?

You can rate an attraction by clicking on the stars next to it to color them in a half at a time and give marks out of five to the attractions of your choice.

What is a review?

You can write a review to let us know what you think of a particular attraction. Fellow members can view these reviews and write responses.

  3. Select ‘Read More’ on the attraction that you wish to add a review to.
  4. Type a review in the box at the bottom of the page and click ‘submit’.
  5. Your review will then go live on the site.

Each destination page on the site has a ‘Book it now’ link on the top-right of the page. Through our selected partners, you can currently make bookings for hotels, travel insurance and rental cars. You can also book flights using our flight search engine.

Simply select the service that you wish to book and a new page will open where you can search and buy.

How can I find out what’s on in a destination?

Each destination on traveldk.com features an extensive list of events, festivals and activities that are happening in that destination now! The information is fed to traveldk.com by Whatsonwhen Limited.

Choose a destination and scroll to the bottom-right of the page for a list of featured events. You can then click on any of these events for more information or see all events that are happening in that destination by viewing the link at the bottom of the list (‘View what’s on in…’)

11. Eyewitness Top Ten iPhone application

Will the applications also work on an iPod Touch?

Yes – all the features (with the exception of the telephone links) will work on iPod Touch devices.

Do the apps require you to have an Internet connection?

All the photos, text and maps are included within the application when you download it from the App Store so you can even use it in Airplane mode whilst travelling to your destination. The only time you’ll need an Internet connection is if you wish to visit one of the websites listed or use the currency converter, which uses the Internet to look up the exchange rate of your chosen currencies and this only requires a very small amount of data transfer.

Why do the telephone links have the international dialing code prefixing the numbers?

The dialing code is there in case you wish to use the telephone links prior to your departure. This should not alter the cost of any calls made although you should check with your service operator if in doubt.

What do the map references relate to?

You will see map references such as Map B3 or Map K5 throughout the application. These are grid references relating to the main maps section of the application to help you locate the point of interest being referred to.
